MEET THE DOCTOR
Dr. Monie Clifton has been practicing in York County since 2006 and opened Lake Wylie Eye in 2009. She graduated cum laude from UNC Charlotte and received her Doctorate of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. She also completed an internship with Indian Health Service at Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation in Bethel, AK.
Dr. Clifton has been voted Lake Wylie's best optometrist several years in a row and is past president of the Catawba Optometric Society. She has also volunteered with the International Lions Club and preformed eye exams in Costa Rica.
Dr. Clifton preforms eye exams on children as young 5 years old as well as adults. In addition to prescribing glasses and contact lenses she evaluates and treats an array of eye diseases and issues.

OPTOMAP TECHNOLOGY
WHAT IS AN OPTOMAP IMAGE?
Getting an optomap image is fast, painless and comfortable. Nothing touches your eye at any time. It is suitable for the whole family. To have the exam, you simply look into the device one eye at a time (like looking through a keyhole) and you will see a comfortable flash of light to let you know the image of your retina has been taken. The capture takes less than a second. Images are available immediately for review. You can see your own retina. You see exactly what your eye care practitioner sees .

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN OPTHALMOLOGIST, OPTOMETRIST AND AN OPTICIAN
An Opthalmologist is a physician (doctor of medicine, M.D.) who specializes in the medical and surgical care of eyes and in the prevention of eye disease. They can also prescribe glasses and contact lenses. An Opthalmologist has typically completed 12 or more years of college training post high school.
An Optometrist has a Doctor of Optometry degree (O.D.). They examine, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the eyes and visual system. They can also prescribe glasses and contact lenses. An Optometrist has completed an undergraduate degree and has gone on to complete 4 years of professional training at a school of optometry.
An Optician is a technician who makes verifies and dispenses lenses based on the prescription from an opthalmologist or optometrist. They are also trained to properly adjust and repair glasses. They typically have completed an apprenticeship and passed a written and or practical state exam.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE AN EYE EXAM
Adults and children should have an eye exam every year to check for changes in vision and to evaluate the health and wellness of the eye.
Young children should have their first eye exam between the ages of 6 months to a year and then again around the age of 3 and then right before they start school.
WHY IS A CONTACT LENS EVALUATION NEEDED AND WHAT DOES THAT INCLUDE
If you want to wear contact lenses you need a contact lens evaluation in addition to a comprehensive eye exam. Special tests and measurements will be preformed and taken to determine the best contact lens to fit your eye. A prescription for glasses can not be used to purchase contact lenses. The two prescriptions are very different. An eyeglasses prescription measures for lenses that sit about 12 mm in front of your eyes and a contact lens prescription is determined for lenses that sit directly on the surface of the eye.
Your contact lens evaluation fee is determined by the type of contact lens you need based on your visual demands and prescription. (For example toric and multifocal contact lenses are more difficult and take more time to fit than a regular contact lens).
Your contact lens prescription will expire ONE year from the date of your exam. This one year expiration is a federal regulation since contact lenses are considered a medical device. A contact lens evaluation fee will be charged each year in order to receive a valid contact lens prescription.
